Shipping heavy machinery and industrial equipment internationally presents unique challenges. Unlike standardised cargo, each piece of machinery demands custom handling, specialist securing, and often bespoke permits. Whether you're moving manufacturing plant from Germany to Asia, construction equipment to the Middle East, or industrial machinery across continents, success depends on detailed planning, compliant lashing, and expertise in oversize load regulations.

Container Options for Machinery Cargo

Standard 20-foot and 40-foot containers are suitable for compact machinery under 20 tonnes. However, most industrial equipment requires specialised containers. Flat-rack containers—essentially containers without sides or roof—accommodate machinery exceeding standard container dimensions. These are ideal for plant with heights over 2.6 metres or widths beyond 2.35 metres. Flat-racks are lashed securely and then wrapped with tarpaulins for weather protection.

Open-top containers are preferred when machinery requires overhead loading via crane. Manufacturing equipment, turbines, and compressors often cannot be lowered into a standard container horizontally. Open-tops allow vertical placement. The cargo is then secured with heavy lashing straps and covered with weather protection. High-cube open-tops provide additional clearance for taller equipment.

For wheeled equipment—excavators, graders, compactors—Roll-On/Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) shipping is often more economical. Machinery drives aboard specialist carriers, eliminating crane hire and reducing loading time. Ro-Ro is cost-effective for movements across Europe and the Mediterranean but less practical for long-distance transoceanic routes due to limited vessel schedules.

Lashing, Blocking, and Securing Standards

ISO 3691 and the Container Handbook establish mandatory standards for lashing machinery. These standards specify the securing strength, angle of lashing straps, and permitted forces on machinery. Undersecured cargo can shift during sea transit, causing structural damage, equipment failure, or—in worst cases—container loss overboard. Over-securing can conversely damage the machinery itself if excessive tension is applied to delicate components.

High-value machinery—generators, printing presses, precision equipment—justifies additional investment in moisture barriers and protective wrapping.

Oversize Load Permits and Road Transport

Machinery exceeding 45 feet in length, 3 metres in height, or 100 tonnes in weight requires abnormal load permits and specialist escorting in the UK and Europe. These permits specify authorised routes, bridge height restrictions, and required escort vehicles. Processing permits typically requires 4–6 weeks and costs £500–£2,000 depending on distance and complexity.
