International Pet Relocation: Everything UK Pet Owners Need to Know

Relocating internationally with pets demands careful planning across health certification, vaccination schedules, transport logistics, and destination-specific import requirements. Beginning preparation 4-6 months before your planned departure date gives you the time needed to navigate regulatory requirements without last-minute complications.

Starting Early: The 4-6 Month Planning Timeline

Begin by researching your destination country requirements as soon as your move is confirmed. Different countries impose vastly different requirements: some accept pets with minimal documentation while others (Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hawaii) mandate extended quarantine periods. Confirm your destination rules with the relevant government agricultural authority before booking anything.

Microchipping is the universal first step and must be completed before any health certification or rabies vaccination is administered. The ISO-standard 15-digit microchip enables electronic identification at border control points worldwide. Your veterinarian performs microchipping as a routine procedure, typically under £30.

Vaccinations and Health Certification Requirements

Rabies vaccination is universally required for international pet travel. If your pet has never been vaccinated against rabies, they must receive the vaccination and then wait 21 days before most destinations will accept their entry. Some destinations require a waiting period of up to 6 months or a titre test confirming adequate antibody levels before permitting entry.

The official health certificate must be issued by your veterinarian within 10 days of travel and endorses your pet fit for the journey. For most non-EU destinations, the health certificate also requires endorsement by an Official Veterinarian registered with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). Allow 5-7 working days for APHA endorsement and apply in advance of your 10-day window.

EU countries require an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) replacing the previous pet passport post-Brexit. UK-issued pet passports are no longer accepted for travel to the EU. Your vet can issue an AHC valid for 10 days of travel entry to the EU, 4 months of onward travel within the EU, and re-entry to Great Britain.

Quarantine Rules by Destination

Most European, North American, and Middle Eastern destinations impose no mandatory quarantine for pets meeting vaccination and health certificate requirements. Australia mandates a minimum 10-day quarantine for cats and dogs at approved facilities in Melbourne. New Zealand requires 10 days quarantine. Japan imposes 180-day quarantine for animals not meeting strict pre-arrival preparation protocols.

Australia and New Zealand require a rabies titre test (RNAT) demonstrating adequate vaccine antibody levels, completed at an approved laboratory at least 180 days before entry. This long lead time is the most common reason pet owners miss their preferred travel date. If travelling to these destinations, address the titre test requirement first.

Choosing Approved Carriers and IATA-Compliant Crates

Not all airlines accept pets on all routes. Most major carriers accept pets in climate-controlled cargo holds and some permit small pets in-cabin. Book your pet reservation directly with the airline at the time of flight booking — space is limited and often fills months in advance on popular international routes.

IATA-compliant crates must be airline-approved, rigid, well-ventilated, and large enough for your pet to stand, turn, and lie down comfortably. Introduce your pet to the crate 6-8 weeks before travel so they associate it with positive experiences. Familiar bedding and a worn item of clothing can reduce travel anxiety.
